Located at the Place du Champ de Mars in a contemporary building, the Museum of Fine Arts and History offers a collection of great richness and diversity.
Through more than 500 works on display, the museum’s collections offer a broad panorama of the history of painting from the 17th century to the present day, illustrated by many artists such as Jordaens, Rousseau, Corot, Millet, Boudin, Moreau, Léger and Denis de Castro as well as portraits of the Matignon-Grimaldi family.
The museum also boasts a wonderful collection of tapestries dating from the 16th to 20th century, including the famous “Tenture des Amours” and works by Gombault Macée to Jean Lurçat and Grau Garriga.
In 2019: The museum underwent extensive refurbishment concentrating on the space dedicated to the history of the town of Saint Lô with the objective to provide a warm and welcoming environment to its visitors and also to prioritize new works of art.
After 6 months of refurbishment in 2019, adding to its already excellent space dedicated to Saint-Lô’s rich history from the Neolithic times to its destruction in 1944, the museum now offers a new exhibition dedicated to the history of the town from 1944 to the present day. With the help of archival documents, reconstructions, videos and photos, the Museum of Art and History will captivate you with its story of the rebirth of Saint-Lô.
Good to know: The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
"The rebuilding of Saint-Lô in its entirety, provides a unique insight of the era of reconstruction within the museum itself, as well as highlighting the different tools and materials that participated in it, make the exhibition interactive and captivating, not only to discover the history of Saint-Lô but to fully immerse you in it."
